Low water pressure can be frustrating, turning simple tasks into hassles. Showers become a struggle as you try to rinse away the soap and shampoo. Your washing machine takes forever to fill up and the dishwasher doesn’t seem to get the dishes clean.
There are many reasons why your home may be experiencing inadequate water pressure, but let’s explore six of the most common ones.
Reasons for Low Water Pressure
#1: Check Main Water Valve. If you notice your water pressure decrease suddenly, make sure the water main shut off valve is fully open. Especially if you have had any recent plumbing repairs where the water had to be shut off.
#2: Municipal Water Problem. Low water pressure may not have anything to do with your own plumbing system. If you notice a sudden change in water pressure, call your municipal water supply.
#3: Water Leak. A leak could very likely reduce water flow. If you cannot find a visible leak, turn off all the faucets inside and outside your home. Check your water meter about an hour later. If it shows current water usage, you have a leak. We recommend calling a licensed plumber.
#4: Faulty Pressure Regulator. High water pressure can damage pipes and fixtures. There is a pressure regulator valve on the main service line to protect your home. Most are set to 50 pounds per square inch (psi). If yours is set lower, it may need to be adjusted.
#5: Corroded Pipes. Corrosion is a natural process of buildup in pipes that restricts water flow. It happens gradually and older pipes are more likely to have corrosion. If you notice a tinted red or brown water, this may be the culprit. Unfortunately, the only solution is to have your pipes replaced.
#6: Scale Buildup. Scale buildup is a common problem if you have hard water. Hard water has a high mineral content of calcium and magnesium and forms deposits in your pipes. We recommend replacing your pipes and installing a water softener to prevent scale buildup in the future.
