We are lucky to have water piped into our homes when some people in the world do not have clean water. But, just because your water comes from a water treatment facility does not mean it is 100% free of contaminants. Let’s take a look at the 5 most common water contaminants in drinking water and the benefits of a water filtration system.
The Most Common Water Contaminants
- Microorganisms – Tiny bacteria and virus microbes primarily come from human or animal waste that wash into lakes and rivers. Water treatment facilities test for the presence of coliform and E. coli, two types of bacteria. If found, they must do further testing and you may have to boil your water before drinking while they look for the source of contamination and treat the water. U.S. regulations call for 99.99% removal of viruses, most often by chlorination.
- Nitrate – Nitrate is a chemical found in most fertilizers, manure, and liquid waste discharged from septic tanks. It is more likely to be found in well water. High levels of nitrate could also indicate that pesticides and herbicides are entering the water supply.
- Arsenic – This element occurs naturally in rocks and soil, but it can also enter the groundwater as a waste byproduct from mining and coal burning. Long term exposure to arsenic has been linked to increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurological conditions.
- Lead – The EPA says lead is a toxic chemical that can be harmful to human health, especially children. Lead can come into the water supply from corrosion of metal pipes.
- Copper – Copper can also get into our water supply from corrosion of pipes. Short-term exposure may cause gastrointestinal issues. Long-term exposure could lead to liver and kidney problems.
How Water Filtration Can Help
If you are concerned about impurities in your drinking water, a reverse osmosis (RO) water system is the answer. RO systems effectively reduce harmful water contaminants, turning tap water into convenient, fresh and clean water available right at your own faucet.
